Mars Atmospheric Characterization with a ChipSat Swarm
نویسندگان
چکیده
A mission scenario is proposed, where a large number of centimeter-scale femto-spacecraft are dispersed from CubeSat piggyback payload on future Mars mission. This swarm would deliver real-time massively parallel sensing throughout entry, descent, and landing with in-orbit measurements, atmospheric characterization during even surface science upon landing. Because few entry profiles exist at present for the in situ modeling Mars, ChipSat offers promising tool cost-effective that could lower risks ongoing exploration programs.

Mars Atmospheric Characterization Using Advanced 2-μm Orbiting Lidar
Mars atmospheric characterization is critical for exploring the planet. Future Mars missions require landing massive payloads to the surface with high accuracy. The accuracy of entry, descent and landing (EDL) of a payload is a major technical challenge for future Mars missions. Mars EDL depends on atmospheric conditions such as density, wind and dust as well as surface topography. A Mars orbit...
متن کاملAtmospheric Escape at Mars
Introduction: Several mechanisms have been identified to result in escape of the Martian atmosphere. These mechanisms can be divided in two groups [1]: • Thermal escape or Jeans escape, which corresponds to the loss of atoms in the high energy tail of the energy distribution at the exobase. This mechanism is important only for the light species such as hydrogen or deuterium. • Non-thermal escap...

متن کاملTopographic and Atmospheric Pressure Mapping of Mars
Introduction: The topography of Mars remained unknown until the first orbiting spacecraft, since early ground-based observations of Mars displayed only variations due to albedo which correspond to changes in surface composition and texture rather than changes in surface altitude. However a technique was being developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s to determine the Martian topography by mea...
متن کاملAtmospheric biomarkers of subsurface life on Mars
[1] If life exists beneath the Martian surface similar to terrestrial bacteria that rely upon chemical reactions involving H2 and/or CO as energy sources, then it may be possible to infer its existence by observing metabolic byproducts that would appear as trace gases in the Martian atmosphere. We have studied the fate of organic trace gases in the Martian atmosphere and find that most have ver...
